“Shake the Gates,” was inspired by Bill McKibben’s groundbreaking, 1992 experiment on media overload, documented in his book The Age of Missing Information.
lyrics
Well, here we are singing jingles to ourselves
We should be shouting hymns up to the angels
The angels, the angels
Shout like you mean it, shake the gates
Shout like you mean it, shake the gates
Oh, the ridicule of hope will erode your very bones
Leave that thing alone and come back home
Come back home
Shout like you mean it, shake the gates
Shout like you mean it, shake the gates, the gates
I’ve done my time running to the lights and the noise
Looks like the fire’s glow, it looks like the fire’s glow
But it won’t keep you warm tonight
Keep you warm
Meet me on the ridge to watch the water rise
Up above the bridge, and up above our pride
Up above the program, up above that spell
Up above the spectacle brought to you by hell
Brought to you by hell
Welcome, welcome
Shout like you mean it, shake the gates
Shout like you mean it, shake the gates, the gates
Shout shout
Shout shout
Shout shout

Production, mixing and overdubs were completed in Fayetteville, Arkansas, by Talley's brother and former band mate, Mark Summerlin, guitarist, backing vocalist, and music director for Grammy Award-winning, international pop star Seal. Brother Paul, also currently touring with Seal, added backing vocals and keyboards to the EP as well.
Basic tracks were recorded and produced by Andy Sharp at Scharf-Sharp Farms in Austin, Texas. Sharp’s previous credits include engineering and production assistance for Sheryl Crow, Spoon, and Blue October. The drumming of Austin’s Chris Searles – formerly with Shawn Colvin and Ian Moore, now on tour with Alejandro Escovedo – is a solid, steady highlight of each track.
